Yesterday, Open Cages announced a fundraiser aimed at starting a nationwide outdoor advertising campaign against Tesco. We want to use billboards to make people aware of the truth behind the broiler chicken sold on Tesco’s shelves. You can donate to the fundraiser here.

According to a new poll conducted by YouGov, 72% of Brits think that people should get to know if the chicken they consider buying had a healthy life. However, only 19% of the respondents think that supermarkets are honest about the welfare of the chickens they sell. This means there is a widespread suspicion towards the industry. And it’s there for a reason.

The unnaturally fast growth rate causes broiler chickens to suffer from a wide range of health problems. Open Cages is asking Tesco to stop using fast growing breeds.

Despite multiple appeals from Open Cages and others, Tesco is still refusing to fix serious problems in their production chain. Tesco uses selectively bred chickens that grow so quickly that often the poor birds can’t even stand up on their own legs few weeks into their life. This causes them health problems that range from ammonia burns to death from heart attack or hunger.

Open Cages are campaigning to make Tesco drop the practices that cause the most suffering for chickens in their production chain. Making everyone aware of how bad the current conditions are is an important step in achieving this. Please help us to fight for a better world for animals by donating now.
