We are thrilled to share this news with you.

That’s right: as of this week Open Cages is officially a UK charity!

After two years of applications, endless documents, and hard work: we have been recognised by the UK Government as a public good and worthy of entry into the charity commission register! Our purposes as a charity are:

(A) TO PROMOTE HUMANE BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS ANIMALS AND THE WELFARE OF FARMED ANIMALS;

(B) TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN MATTERS PERTAINING TO ANIMAL WELFARE IN GENERAL, AND IN PARTICULAR (BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY) THE REARING, HUSBANDRY AND GENERAL FARMING PRACTICES RELATING TO THE TREATMENT OF FARM ANIMALS; AND

(C) THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY AND SUFFERING AMONG ANIMALS.

Translation: we exist to create a world free from animal suffering. ?

This is a big day for us.

For all of our history in the UK we were a grassroots organisation doing our best to create change with limited resources. I am so proud of how far we have come.

What started as myself and a couple young but relentlessly dedicated activists steadily grew across the UK and even Europe. More and more you joined us in the mission, by working on the frontlines or from home with petitions and donations. We matured and teamed up with British figures like Joanna Lumley, gained strong political allies, worked with the UK’s leading news platforms, and now, Open Cages has blossomed into a full blown animal rights charity.

Wow, that feels good to say! This is a milestone in our journey towards a world free from animal suffering. And we will only go up from here.

With so many more tools available to us, we will now be able to do much more to help animals. And I am very happy that what we have built has finally been stamped as something officially in the public benefit. Because it is: animals need us. What could be more necessary?

Most importantly, this standing will open many new doors for us as a respected, professional and well-recognised community. I cannot thank you enough for being with us – this is something I hope we can celebrate together. Open Cages is your organisation.

Now, let’s get back to work: animals are counting on us.

PS: why not start this charity off right with a generous donation? ❤️
